What Men’s group is right for me?

If you know you need to join a Men’s Support Group, but you are not sure what kind of group to join, then you are reading the right blog.

Knowing what the next right thing is in your healing journey is critical. Jumping into a group that is focused on things you have already got put in place and you will feel like you are wasting your precious time. While joining a group that deals with things that are ahead of you on your journey and you will end up wasting your money. Time and money are the two things none of us have enough of, so making sure you are in the right group on your journey is really important.

Unchained Recovery is currently offering Two separate Men’s Support Groups. Each group is once a week and each session lasts 90 minutes. As a bonus by being a group member, you receive one hour of individual counseling per month, for FREE! That’s a total of 7 hours of counseling a month! While both groups are designed for men recovering from unwanted sexual behaviors, each serves very different purposes.

One group focuses on Men’s healing. Establishing sobriety, by creating a path to abstain from those unwanted sexual behaviors that keep repeating and defeating him. This has a lot of practical applications, tools and development of healthy coping strategies.

Coping can get a bad rap, but life is hard, and we all have to cope. How we cope is what can get a guy into trouble. So, developing healthy coping mechanisms is paramount to long lasting health. In addition to this, men learn to look at their feelings, past and present, that they are escaping and learn to be present with them and even engage with them as part of their healing. For lasting healing to really take root, men look into the hurts of the past and stressors of today that trigger their reactions. Bringing compassion and healing to these places allows for long term growth and health to flourish.

These are just some of the foundational parts of the Men’s Healing group. This group takes place 12 weeks at a time. After 12 weeks men reevaluate their growth and healing with a CSAT to determine if the group is meeting their needs and is currently in alignment with his goals for recovery.  If the group is no longer meeting his needs or aligning with his goals, a new path forward is needed. If the group is meeting his needs and goals, then continuing with the group for the next 12 weeks is appropriate.

The other Men’s Help Her Heal Group is designed for those men secure in their healing journey. Men who have established sobriety and recovery in their life are in a position to offer their wife a sense of hope that things can change. When this happens, he is positioned to build on his recovery to offer a safe place for his wife to heal from the betrayal trauma his past choices have created.

Her pain does not disappear because of an apology. The harm of the past still weighs on her and it’s her husband's job to provide her with an opportunity to move out of trauma and into a healthier place.

Men learn how to help wives heal from betrayal trauma by becoming empathetic instead of defensive. They learn how to rebuild trust, manage triggers to deescalate anger and reactivity. Men learn how to find true intimacy instead of just relying on sex to connect. They develop resistance to shame while identifying their wife’s unique needs for healing and build new skills and find a community to support them along the way. This is an in-depth learning experience where men are challenged while they grow.

This group is only 12 weeks long, but the skills learned last a lifetime. In the group we practice the skills we learn through role play and sharing our experiences with one another. Our shared stories and skills make this a dynamic place to learn and grow.
